San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is making strides in improving technology and innovation through its Technology Improvement Programme (TIP) to enhance operational efficiency, guest experiences, and collaboration across the aviation industry. Launched in January 2025, the programme aims to set a three-to-five-year Technology Roadmap to leverage technology as vital infrastructure.
The TIP focuses on four key areas: infrastructure enablement, guest experiences and revenue enhancement, technology upskilling, and cyber-security. By standardizing technology infrastructure and improving data management, SFO aims to build a more proactive and agile foundation to support growth and adapt to industry trends.
By implementing the TIP, SFO is working towards resolving pain points such as ‘shadow technology’ deployments and proprietary systems, aiming to create more connected and efficient solutions that better serve the airport’s operations. The successful adoption of the programme at SFO has come from a commitment to cultural and organizational change relating to technology.
To foster collaboration and innovation, SFO hosted its first Tech Day to engage representatives from aviation and technology firms, local businesses, and academia to learn about the airport’s challenges and upcoming technology pursuits.
Iyad Hindiyeh, who leads SFO’s Technology Team, brings over 20 years of experience in aviation technology, while Ana Živanović, overseeing strategic initiatives in technology, has a background in engineering and recently completed her MBA. Both are committed to leveraging technology to position SFO as the airport of choice at every step of the passenger journey.
