Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized the importance of sustainable lifestyle options that are available, accessible, and affordable for all consumers while protecting basic rights and needs. Speaking at a World Consumer Rights Day webinar, Joshi highlighted that sustainable lifestyles are crucial in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
The minister stressed the government’s commitment to fostering sustainability through responsible consumer policies, including expanding eco-labelling programs and regulations against greenwashing. He also mentioned efforts to make sustainable products more affordable and encourage industries to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
Joshi discussed the government’s shift from “consumer protection” to promoting “consumer interest” and “consumer care,” emphasizing shared responsibilities towards society. He mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mission LiFE, which aims to move towards a circular economy and reduce disposable consumption.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare also spoke on the importance of sustainability being affordable and accessible for consumers, aligning with the country’s cultural values.
Overall, the government is working towards a just transition to sustainable lifestyles, ensuring consumers are well-informed, protected, and encouraged to make sustainable choices. The webinar was attended by Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs B L Verma and other senior ministry officials.
