New Hampshire House to Host Civil Discourse Training
The New Hampshire House is set to host a training session on civil discourse next week, led by the nonprofit organization Braver Angels. The organization aims to bridge the partisan divide and create a more respectful and productive political environment. Speaker Sherman Packard has encouraged all representatives and staff to attend the “Managing Difficult Conversations” training, followed by a Christmas party.
Doug Teschner, a former state representative and volunteer for Braver Angels, highlighted the decline in civility in political discourse and the importance of learning to listen and engage with those with differing views. This training will be the sixth workshop held by Braver Angels in the State House since 2021. The organization has also inspired the creation of the Granite Bridge Legislative Alliance, which aims to build working relationships between lawmakers from different political backgrounds.
The training aims to improve communication and understanding among lawmakers, with a focus on listening to others’ viewpoints and finding common ground. Lawmakers who have attended similar training programs have emphasized the value of listening to others and understanding their perspectives before forming opinions. The goal is to encourage a more respectful and productive dialogue, even in the face of political differences.
The rise of political polarization, fueled in part by social media algorithms and profit-driven conflict, has made civil discourse more challenging. By providing tools and strategies for effective communication, Braver Angels hopes to restore a sense of decorum and mutual respect in political discourse. The training session will offer scenarios for applying best practices in communication and finding areas of agreement before addressing differences.
