During war games, Taiwan reports record number of 153 Chinese military planes approaching island

Taiwan’s defense ministry reported that it detected a record 153 Chinese military aircraft surrounding the island during China’s “Joint Sword-2024B” drills, held as a warning against “separatist acts” following Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s speech. Of the 153 aircraft, 28 crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait. Other areas of activity included off Taiwan’s southeastern coast and in the South China Sea near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands. Additionally, 14 Chinese navy ships and 12 official ships were spotted. Premier Cho Jung-tai in Taipei stated that these drills not only disturb peace and stability in the region but also impact international navigational rights and air and sea space, attracting the attention of other countries. Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s territorial claims, insisting that only the island’s people can decide their future. The surge in Chinese warplane activity indicates heightened tensions between the two countries, with Taiwan continuing to assert its sovereignty and independence from China. The escalating military activities in the region raise concerns about potential conflicts and disruptions to international maritime and aerial routes.
