Thelma Ruby, a 99-year-old actor, has vowed to protest against plans to build 39 new tennis courts at Wimbledon by chaining herself to the grounds of the All England Club. Ruby, who lives in a flat overlooking the club, expressed concerns about environmental damage and the loss of green space. She described the proposed construction as a threat to the trees and view she enjoys from her window, stating that it gives her strength.
The All England Club argues that the expansion is necessary to maintain Wimbledon’s status as a top tennis tournament. However, residents and activists believe it will cause environmental harm and take a decade to build. Despite initial approval from Merton council, the plans were referred to the Greater London Authority after rejection by Wandsworth council in November.
Liberal Democrat MP Paul Kohler and Christopher Coombe of Save Wimbledon Park assured residents that the fight is not over. They highlighted a supreme court case in Shrewsbury as an example of successful opposition to development plans on protected land. The decision on the Wimbledon tennis court expansion will ultimately be made by Jules Pipe, the deputy mayor of London, after Sadiq Khan recused himself due to his previous support for the project.
Residents and activists remain determined to protect Wimbledon’s green spaces and are prepared to continue their efforts through legal means if necessary. The outcome of the decision on Friday will determine the next steps in the ongoing battle over the fate of Wimbledon Park.
