A haunted house in Queens known as A Haunting in Hollis was shut down due to safety hazards and labeled a “death trap” by the FDNY. It had been illegally converted into a commercial haunted attraction inside a two-family house. After making various safety improvements, the Department of Buildings allowed the haunted house to reopen. However, Solainne Mancero-Tannis, who visited the attraction with her family, suffered severe ankle injuries while going down a slide called “Satan’s Slope.” She needed surgeries and is still undergoing physical therapy a year later. Mancero-Tannis has filed a lawsuit against the operators of the haunted house, joining at least four other victims who claim they were also injured on the slide. The operator’s attorney, Lawrence Carra, stated that the slide has since been removed and they try to provide a safe environment for their guests, suggesting that the injuries were the result of the victims’ own actions. Mancero-Tannis, however, maintains that there were no warning signs or workers around the slide to ensure her safety. She hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of haunted attractions and seek compensation for her injuries. The incident highlights the importance of ensuring the safety of Halloween attractions to prevent harm to visitors.
