New Hampshire House Finance Committee Leader Faces Backlash Over Comments on Abuse Victims
New Hampshire State Rep. Ken Weyler, who is responsible for setting the state’s budget, has come under fire for his recent comments regarding victims of abuse at the state’s youth detention facility. Weyler criticized the state for allocating a large amount of money to compensate the victims, implying that they did not deserve support and were responsible for the abuse they suffered.
Over 1,000 individuals have accused the Youth Development Center of abuse over the years, leading to one of the biggest youth detention scandals in U.S. history. Lawmakers have set aside hundreds of millions of dollars for compensating the victims, with Weyler expressing concerns about the size of the payouts and implying that the money would be spent on drugs and alcohol.
Weyler’s comments have sparked outrage from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, with some calling his remarks “abhorrent and disgusting.” House Democrats are urging House Speaker Sherman Packard to remove Weyler from any work related to the YDC settlements.
This is not the first time Weyler has faced controversy over his comments. In the past, he has been accused of spreading disinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine and was removed from his position as House finance chair for sharing conspiracy theories about vaccines and the Catholic Church. Despite his history of controversial statements, Weyler remains in his position as the House’s top budget writer.
