Red Cross confirms Palestinian medic missing after IDF attack on convoy is being held by Israel

A Palestinian medic, Assad al-Nassasra, who went missing after an attack by Israeli troops on emergency vehicles in the Gaza Strip, has been confirmed to be detained by Israel. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) informed Nassasra’s family and employer, the Palestine Red Crescent Society. The incident occurred on March 23, where 15 Palestinian paramedics and emergency workers were killed, initially believed to be militants but later revealed to be medics. Autopsy reports showed that the victims were shot mainly in the head or chest and were wearing their Red Crescent or Civil Defense uniforms at the time. The IDF initially claimed the vehicles approached suspiciously without headlights or emergency signals, but video evidence contradicted this account. The bodies of the victims were found buried in a mass grave in Gaza a week later.

The ICRC has not been granted access to Nassasra or other Palestinian detainees since Hamas-led terrorist attacks in 2023, which escalated the long-standing conflict and resulted in thousands of deaths. The ICRC continues to call for access to all places of detention and emphasizes the importance of treating all detainees humanely and with dignity. The IDF has transferred the incident to a fact-finding mechanism for investigation but did not comment on the reported autopsies. The situation highlights the ongoing tensions and violence in the region, with both sides facing criticism and scrutiny for their actions.
