Democratic senator from New Hampshire decides not to run for reelection

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the first woman elected as both governor and senator in the United States, has announced that she will not seek reelection next year. The decision marks the end of a historic political career and deals a blow to Democrats who are already facing challenges in regaining the Senate majority. Shaheen’s move comes as Republicans hold a narrow four-seat advantage in the Senate, giving them legitimate pickup opportunities in states like Georgia, Michigan, and now New Hampshire.

Shaheen, who has been a political force in New Hampshire for decades, was expected to easily win another term if she had chosen to run. Her departure opens up a possible Senate bid for former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown, who unsuccessfully challenged Shaheen in 2014. New Hampshire, a swing state with a history of electing leaders from both parties, has narrowly favored Democrats in recent presidential elections.

With Shaheen’s announcement, the Democrats are now facing a challenging political map in the upcoming midterm elections. The party that controls the Senate majority also controls key political and judicial nominations from President Donald Trump and his legislative agenda. As Shaheen prepares to leave office, Democrats will need to focus on other pickup opportunities, such as in Maine, where Senator Susan Collins, the only Republican senator in New England, is up for reelection. Despite the obstacles ahead, Democrats will need to strategize and mobilize in order to make gains in Congress and potentially reclaim the majority in the Senate.
