New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice James Bassett, a Canterbury resident, has announced his retirement from the court at the end of August. Nominated by then-Governor John Lynch in 2012, Bassett has served on the court for nearly a decade. Despite his impending retirement, Bassett will continue to be actively involved in court matters until his departure.
Throughout his tenure, Bassett has chaired various committees and commissions, including the Access to Justice Commission. With 27 years of legal experience in Concord, Bassett has been praised for his dedication and advocacy for improving the justice system. Chief Justice Gordon J. MacDonald lauded Bassett for his exceptional service to the public and the court.
Bassett, who has been a resident of Canterbury since 1985, has been involved in various community boards in addition to his legal career. His retirement marks the end of an era for the New Hampshire Supreme Court, but his contributions and legacy will be remembered and appreciated by his colleagues and the entire Judicial Branch.
