Celebrities Speak Out Against Brittany Ferries’ Live Export Operations

Actors Dame Joanna Lumley and Pauline McLynn have joined over 110 others in condemning Brittany Ferries’ decision to resume transporting livestock from Ireland to France, including unweaned calves. The group, which includes Chris Packham and Neil Hannon, is urging the ferry company to reconsider their stance. Renowned vet Pete Wedderburn has also voiced his support, stating that animals should not have to suffer during long journeys for slaughter.

Director of Ethical Farming Ireland, Caroline Rowley, expressed concerns about the welfare of the animals and criticized Brittany Ferries’ decision. She highlighted the risks unweaned calves face during transport, including illness, hunger, and exhaustion. Investigations have shown that calves exported to other countries have ended up in areas with poor animal welfare standards.

Rowley revealed that the ferry company has been made aware of the potential breach of EU legislation regarding animal welfare during transport, but they have chosen to proceed regardless. She also criticized Brittany Ferries’ marketing campaign, which promises customers an ‘unforgettable experience’ while ignoring the suffering of the animals on board.

The policy change by Brittany Ferries aligns them with Irish Ferries and Stena Line in transporting animals to mainland Europe, despite opposition from animal welfare organizations, scientists, MEPs, and the public. P&O remains the only ferry company refusing to export live animals for fattening and slaughter.
