Man charged with intoxication manslaughter after 17-vehicle Texas crash results in 5 fatalities

A man in Austin, Texas was charged with intoxication manslaughter after a late-night wreck on Interstate 35 involved 17 vehicles, resulting in the deaths of five people – three adults, a child, and an infant. Eleven others were injured in the crash. Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, faces five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault. The southbound lanes of I-35 were closed for hours following the crash, which left a scene of mangled vehicles and debris. Authorities have not released details on what caused the wreck, stating that the investigation is still ongoing. Police Officer Austin Zarling described the collision as “very large and very complex.” Eyewitness Edgar Viera described the scene as heartbreaking, as he and others tried to help those involved without the proper tools to open the vehicles. The southbound lanes of I-35 were reopened around 1 p.m. following the crash that occurred just before 11:30 p.m. the previous night. Araya remains in custody in Travis County Jail, and it is unclear if he has an attorney at this time.
