Lucknow officially designated as the 24th National Historic Landmark in New Hampshire

Castle in the Clouds and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust proudly announced that the Lucknow Estate has been designated as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This recognition highlights the estate’s architecture, landscape design, and conservation efforts over a century. The NHL designation is the highest federal recognition of a property’s historical significance, showcasing dedicated stewardship.

The estate covers more than 5,300 acres of the original 6,300-acre property, built between 1913-1914 as a retirement retreat by Thomas Gustave Plant. It is a premier example of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring Lucknow Mansion, two gate houses, and a trail system linking seven mountain peaks.

The preservation of the estate is a collaborative effort involving the Castle Preservation Society, Lakes Region Conservation Trust, and Crystal Geyser Alpine Water. Lucknow is the 4th NHL District in New Hampshire and the largest geographically.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced this designation as part of designating 19 new NHLs across the country. Lucknow now joins over 2,600 landmarks showcasing America’s heritage. Castle in the Clouds offers visitors a glimpse into the past and contemporary comforts, with various activities and events for all to enjoy.
