Concord Monitor – Exploring New Hampshire’s Second-Tier Trails

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is heading to New Hampshire this weekend to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris, her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and other down-ballot Democrats running in the upcoming elections. Pritzker will be joining volunteers at a launch event in Bedford on Sunday and rallying with union members at the New Hampshire AFL-CIO’s Labor Day breakfast in Manchester on Monday.

While New Hampshire remained a competitive general election state, it has been 24 years since a Republican won the state’s four electoral votes. Former President Donald Trump has not visited New Hampshire since his primary victory celebration in January, and his running mate, U.S. Sen. JD Vance, has not been in the state since joining the GOP ticket a month ago. On the Democratic side, neither Harris nor Walz have visited the state during the general election.

Despite being a second-tier swing state, New Hampshire has seen a surge in Democratic activity, with high-profile surrogates such as Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Governors Christine Whitmer and Gavin Newsom, and U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna all making appearances in the state. Recent polls indicate that Harris holds a single-digit lead over Trump in New Hampshire. Analysts suggest that the lack of visits from national candidates in New Hampshire may indicate a shift in focus to other battleground states that are more closely contested.
