The Pentagon is sending almost 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to crack down on illegal immigration. President Donald Trump has ordered elements of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aviation battalion for this mission. The forces, consisting of soldiers from Fort Carson and Fort Stewart, will provide transportation, engineering support, and detection and monitoring along the border. They will not be involved in deportation operations. The goal of this deployment is to reinforce and expand current border security operations and protect the territorial integrity of the United States.
This new deployment adds to the 9,200 U.S. troops already at the southern border, including both federal orders and National Guard troops under the control of governors. President Trump is determined to use the military to shut down the border and send detained migrants back to their home countries. Military personnel have been deployed to the border on and off since the 1990s to address issues such as migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. This new deployment of troops is part of Trump’s broader efforts to tighten border security and fulfill his campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration.
