Politicians and union leaders in New Hampshire caution against federal cuts at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

New Hampshire lawmakers and union leaders held a press conference on Friday to address the detrimental impacts of federal job cuts on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, along with Congressman Chris Pappas, expressed concerns about the Trump Administration’s efforts to reduce the federal government’s workforce, which they believe will harm national security. The recent actions of Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency were also criticized for creating confusion and uncertainty among shipyard employees. Union leaders highlighted the constant threats of layoffs and lack of information from the federal government as sources of frustration for workers. The group warned against the potential consequences of a hiring freeze and buyouts offered to employees, fearing that these measures could affect the shipyard’s ability to build submarines for the Navy. Senator Susan Collins also joined the conversation, advocating for transparency and clarity regarding the deferred resignation program. Around 145 employees have already accepted this program, which provides a buyout in exchange for resigning. Overall, the lawmakers and union leaders emphasized the urgency of protecting the shipyard’s workforce and ensuring the stability of national defense efforts.
