Authorities caution New Hampshire motorists about E-ZPass text scam

New Hampshire officials are warning E-ZPass users about a new text message scam known as “smishing” that involves deceptive messages claiming to be from E-ZPass. These messages falsely state that a vehicle has unpaid tolls and threaten severe consequences if payment is not made immediately. Officials emphasize that NH E-ZPass and EZDriveMA will never contact customers via text for payment. Residents who receive these messages are advised to report them by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM) and avoid clicking any links. Instead, they should verify their accounts through official sources like the NH E-ZPass website or app. Those who suspect they have been targeted can report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. For further questions, individuals are encouraged to contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline. The public alert was issued by Attorney General John M. Formella and Transportation Commissioner William J. Cass to raise awareness about this fraudulent scheme and protect E-ZPass users from falling victim to it.
