Two New Hampshire teenagers, Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle, have taken on the Trump administration in addition to their state over a law excluding transgender girls from girls’ sports. They filed a federal lawsuit to overturn a state law that bars transgender girls from participating in middle and high school girls sports teams. Their lawyers have requested to expand the lawsuit to target President Donald Trump’s executive order blocking federal funding to schools that allow transgender girls on girls’ sports teams. This move marks the first challenge to Trump’s executive order in federal court, with the teenagers arguing it violates equal protection rights for transgender students.
The lawsuit lists Trump, top federal officials, the New Hampshire Department of Education Commissioner, and the New Hampshire State Board of Education as defendants. The teenagers are part of the GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire. They argue that the state law and Trump’s executive orders discriminate against transgender people and could result in their exclusion from sports. The plaintiffs are still awaiting summonses to be issued to the new defendants before the lawsuit can proceed. Despite the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office defending the law as not unconstitutional and protecting women’s rights, the teenagers are fighting for their right to participate in girls’ sports.
