GMR Group, co-owners of Delhi Capitals, acquire Hampshire cricket team

Hampshire Cricket has made history by becoming the first county to be owned by a foreign company. The acquisition by GMR will see millions of pounds of debt immediately repaid, which is a major positive for the club. Former majority shareholder Rod Bransgrove will still play a role in the club during a two-year phased acquisition period, providing reassurance to members and supporters.

One notable aspect of the acquisition is how it will impact the Hundred competition and the Southern Brave team based at the Utilita Bowl. GMR will be acquiring assets such as the hotel, ground, and golf club of Hampshire Cricket, along with its small stake in the Hundred competition.

The ECB has announced that host counties in the Hundred competition will eventually receive a 51% stake in the competition, although it is unclear how this will play out for Hampshire Cricket in the long run.

Overall, this acquisition represents a new chapter for Hampshire Cricket, with the potential for financial stability and growth under the ownership of GMR. The involvement of former owner Bransgrove during the transition period will help maintain the club’s continuity and ensure a smooth transition for supporters. It remains to be seen how this new ownership will impact the club’s future and its participation in the Hundred competition.
