Georgia man receives almost 500-year sentence for organizing dog fights and mistreating animals

Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and abusing animals. This is the longest known sentence for dog fighting. The case started when an Amazon delivery worker reported seeing dogs tied up with heavy chains on Burrell’s property in Georgia. Authorities found 107 dogs on the property, many of which showed signs of abuse such as being underweight, lacking food, water, and shelter, and being restrained with logging chains. Burrell denied being involved in dog fighting in court. Evidence on his property linked him to dog fighting, including a treadmill designed for dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick used in dog fights.

The dogs were seized under a federal warrant and taken in by a nonprofit organization. One of the dogs, Baby Shark, was found at 8 weeks old and was intended for illegal fighting. Authorities believe that she would have been involved in dog fighting if not rescued. Burrell was convicted by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals, and was sentenced to the maximum allowed by law.

State animal crimes resource prosecutor Jessica K. Rock described the case as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty and dog fighting she had ever seen. The judge’s sentencing decision reflected the severity of the crimes committed by Burrell.
