The families of two transgender teens in New Hampshire have filed a lawsuit challenging a new state law that bans them from playing on girls’ sports teams at their public high schools. The lawsuit argues that 15-year-old Parker Tirrell and 14-year-old Iris Turmelle, who have both been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, should be allowed to participate in school sports like any other girl. The lawsuit claims that the law violates their constitutional protections and federal laws by denying them equal educational opportunities and discriminating against them because of their transgender identity.
The law, signed by Republican Governor Chris Sununu last month, is set to take effect next week. The governor has stated that the law, known as the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act,” aims to ensure fairness and safety in women’s sports by maintaining integrity and competitive balance in athletic competitions. Both the education commissioner and the governor have referred inquiries to the state Department of Justice, which is reviewing the complaint and will respond as appropriate.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Concord, seeks an immediate ruling to allow the girls to play or participate in tryouts for their school sports teams. The families are represented by GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), the ACLU of New Hampshire, and Goodwin. The girls, Tirrell and Turmelle, have both expressed their desire to participate in sports with their peers, stressing the importance of being treated as the girls they have always known themselves to be.
