Man turns in almost 1,000 mice to New Hampshire shelter | National news

In Stratham, New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is dealing with a major influx of mice after a man arrived at the shelter with 150 containers of mice to surrender. This resulted in nearly 1,000 fancy mice being taken in by the shelter, overwhelming the facility and staff. The situation arose due to the rapid reproduction capabilities of mice, with females becoming sexually mature at 6 weeks old and being able to mate again shortly after giving birth. The shelter has turned part of its cat pavilion into a mouse hospital and hotel, with volunteers and staff working tirelessly to care for the animals.

The shelter is seeking donations for food supplies and has enlisted the help of other shelters to take in some of the mice. Despite the challenges, the shelter has managed to prepare several mice for adoption, with names given to each of them by staff and volunteers. One adopter, Elisha Murray, decided to take in four female mice after hearing about the shelter’s situation, despite initially telling her children they couldn’t have more rodents as pets. With the help of the community and volunteers, the New Hampshire SPCA is working to ensure that all of the mice receive the care and attention they need during this unexpected influx.
