Maine ratepayers to foot the bill for New Hampshire power project
Maine ratepayers are facing a $40 million bill for a New Hampshire power project in the White Mountains. The project, originally intended to replace a few damaged poles on a 49-mile transmission line, has now escalated to a $400 million project to rebuild the entire line. Despite efforts by the Maine Public Advocate to intervene in the project, the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Council has denied their petition.
Under a regional transmission agreement, Maine is obligated to pay for a portion of the project, even though it primarily benefits New Hampshire. Eversource, the residential power provider for New Hampshire, has chosen to proceed with the costly rebuild instead of simply fixing the damaged poles.
Maine residents can expect to see their utility bills increase as a result of this unexpected financial burden. The decision to move forward with such a costly project without input from Maine officials has raised concerns about transparency and fairness in regional energy agreements.
