Karoline Leavitt Named Youngest White House Press Secretary in History
President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday that Karoline Leavitt, his campaign press secretary, will serve as the new White House press secretary, making her the youngest individual to hold the position in U.S. history at just 27 years old. Previously, the record was held by Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 during Richard Nixon’s administration.
Trump praised Leavitt for her outstanding performance as the National Press Secretary during his campaign, stating, "Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator. I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium, and help deliver our message to the American People as we Make America Great Again."
A New Hampshire native, Leavitt is recognized as a dynamic and vocal supporter of Trump, adept at articulating the campaign’s positions in media appearances. Before her role in Trump’s 2024 campaign, she served as a spokesperson for MAGA Inc., a super PAC backing the former president, and even ran for Congress in 2022, winning the Republican primary before losing to incumbent Democrat Chris Pappas.
The role of White House press secretary is traditionally pivotal, serving as the public face of the administration and holding daily briefings for the press corps. Trump, however, previously disrupted these norms during his first term, often opting to communicate directly with the public through rallies and social media.
While discussing the future of press briefings, Trump indicated that his administration would offer "total access" to the media, promising frequent briefings under Leavitt’s leadership. Her appointment marks a significant moment in Trump’s ongoing political narrative as he seeks to reshape the way his administration interacts with the media.
