Press Release: High Fire Danger in New Hampshire Amid Ongoing Drought
Updated: November 16, 2024, 4:46 AM EST
New Hampshire is facing critically high fire danger, particularly in the southern regions, due to a combination of a persistent drought and gusty winds. The state has issued a Red Flag Warning effective from 7 AM to 6 PM today, alerting residents to the increased risk of wildfires. With wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph and extremely dry air, any outdoor burning is strongly discouraged as sparks can easily ignite and spread aggressively.
Weather forecasts predict a mixture of sunny skies in the southern parts of the state, while the northern areas may experience more cloud cover. Daytime temperatures are expected to range from the mid-40s in the northern regions to the upper 50s in the south. Tonight, temperatures will drop into the 20s and 30s, leading to a chilly evening.
In addition to fire concerns, this weekend also marks the opening of the ski season at Bretton Woods. Skiers should prepare for chilly conditions, with anticipated highs around 40 degrees and breezy weather. Despite the cool temperatures, more sunshine is expected on Sunday, providing a better experience for those hitting the slopes.
Looking ahead, a weak weather system is expected to bring isolated showers on Monday, but these are unlikely to significantly impact the ongoing drought condition. The fire danger might decrease slightly with this rain, but the start of the week will remain largely dry. Moderate temperatures in the 50s are expected over the next few days, with potential for more substantial rainfall by late Thursday and Friday, potentially alleviating some drought conditions.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant regarding fire safety and to follow local guidelines as the dry weather continues.
