President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Karoline Leavitt, his campaign spokeswoman, will be the White House press secretary in his next administration. At 27, Leavitt will become the youngest person to hold the position in US history. Trump praised Leavitt’s communication skills and expressed confidence in her ability to deliver the administration’s message to the American people.
Leavitt’s background includes studying communications and political science at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, as well as working as a presidential speechwriter and assistant press secretary in Trump’s first administration. She has also served as a communications director for senior Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik.
During her unsuccessful 2022 congressional campaign, Leavitt aligned herself with Trump’s policy priorities, promising to cut taxes, support law enforcement, and advocate for strong borders. She later joined Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign as press secretary.
Leavitt’s appointment as White House press secretary continues the tradition of young communicators in the role, following in the footsteps of Ron Ziegler, who was appointed by Richard Nixon at 29. Her predecessor, Kayleigh McEnany, has gone on to a media career, while others like Stephanie Grisham and Sarah Huckabee Sanders have critiqued the administration. Leavitt’s upcoming role will put her in the spotlight in the White House briefing room, where she is expected to handle interactions with the press on behalf of the administration.
