President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Karoline Leavitt will serve as White House press secretary, praising her as smart, tough, and an effective communicator. Leavitt previously served as the national press secretary for Trump’s campaign and has been a spokesperson for his transition team since Election Day. Leavitt celebrated Trump’s win on social media, thanking him for his efforts to “Save America.” In addition, Trump named Steven Cheung as his incoming director of communications, who held the same role on Trump’s 2024 campaign. Leavitt has defended Trump’s rhetoric and embraced his criticism of media outlets as “fake news.” She ran for Congress in New Hampshire in 2022 but lost to Democratic incumbent Chris Pappas. Leavitt also served as an assistant press secretary during Trump’s first term. NBC News reached out to Leavitt for comment but has not received a response. Overall, Trump’s appointment of Leavitt and Cheung signals his intention to continue his combative relationship with the media and to prioritize messaging to the American people as he works to “Make America Great Again.”
