Senators demand information about Matt Gaetz ethics investigation before voting on attorney general confirmation

Senate Republicans are preparing for a thorough investigation into Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for attorney general, due to an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into alleged sexual misconduct, drug use, and other allegations. Gaetz, who resigned from the House ahead of the completion of the Ethics investigation, was surprised by the nomination, as were many in his own party and at the Justice Department.
Republican senators, including those on the Judiciary Committee overseeing Gaetz’s nomination, expressed interest in seeing the details of the Ethics investigation. The House Ethics Committee had a meeting scheduled to discuss the release of the Gaetz report but was canceled following his resignation. Despite this, senators believe they will obtain key evidence from the FBI background check and the Senate confirmation process.
While some senators, such as Lisa Murkowski and Kevin Cramer, have expressed doubts about Gaetz’s nomination, none have outright rejected it. Gaetz has begun reaching out to senators to gauge his chances of approval, while Vice President-elect JD Vance has also been making calls about Gaetz.
Many senators are concerned about Gaetz’s past scandals, successful coup against the House Speaker, and lack of experience, as well as the impact his nomination could have on the Senate and the Republican Party. The confirmation process for Gaetz will involve public hearings, a Judiciary Committee vote, and a Senate floor vote requiring a simple majority for confirmation.
