Press Release: Red Flag Warning Issued for Southern New Hampshire Amid High Fire Risk
ALLENSTOWN, N.H. — A red flag warning has been issued for most of southern New Hampshire on Friday as severe drought conditions, strong winds, and dry air create an elevated risk of wildfires. With the potential for rapid fire growth in the afternoon, fire officials strongly advise against any outdoor burning activities.
The warning is particularly unusual for this time of year, highlighting the ongoing concern over November’s long-standing dry conditions. Fire departments across the state are coordinating efforts to combat the increased number of brush fires resulting from these conditions.
Forest Protection Bureau Chief Steven Sherman emphasizes the importance of obtaining a permit for any outdoor fire activities in New Hampshire. Many brush fires are traced back to improperly extinguished campfires or wood ash. Those responsible for starting a fire that spreads uncontrollably may face both criminal and financial repercussions. "In New Hampshire, we have criminal penalties in place. If someone starts a fire without a permit or if a controlled fire gets out of hand, they can be held accountable for the damage and suppression costs,” Sherman stated.
In response to the heightened fire danger, some fire departments, including those in Bedford, Merrimack, and Windham, are suspending fire permits. Bedford fire officials plan to reassess the situation next week, especially contingent on any rainfall prior to that time.
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and remain informed about local fire restrictions as they await relief from the persistent drought conditions.
