In a surprising turn of events, a growing number of celebrities, journalists, and prominent figures are leaving the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, in favor of the upstart social media platform Bluesky. The exodus from X is driven by concerns over issues such as far-right content, hate speech, transphobia, racism, harassment, pornography, and crypto scams, as well as the political views of owner Elon Musk.
Bluesky has seen a significant surge in users, with over 1 million new users joining just on Thursday alone. The platform now boasts 15 million users, up from 10 million in early September. Prominent figures from the entertainment industry, such as Lizzo, Barbra Streisand, and James Gunn, have already made the switch to Bluesky, along with leaders like Mark Cuban and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Journalists are also flocking to Bluesky, with prominent names like Joy-Ann Reid, Chris Hayes, Kara Swisher, and Rachel Maddow actively using the platform. Media outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and The Financial Times have also opened Bluesky accounts.
Bluesky’s growth is further fueled by the migration of fandoms from X, including fans of artists like Taylor Swift, BTS, and Beyoncé, as well as sports enthusiasts. While Bluesky still has a way to go to catch up to larger platforms like X and Meta’s Threads, its rapid growth and appeal to high-profile figures suggest it could become a major player in the social media landscape.
