New Hampshire Ports Director Geno Marconi and his wife, Associate Supreme Court Justice Anna Barbara Hantz Marconi, are facing criminal charges following allegations of interfering in a criminal investigation. Marconi has been indicted on various charges, including Tampering with Witnesses and Informants. Bradley Cook, chairman of the Division of Ports and Harbors Advisory Council, has also been charged for perjury and false swearing. The charges stem from Marconi allegedly providing Cook with confidential driving records and deleting a voice mail to hinder an investigation. Cook is accused of lying to the grand jury about the records.
The motive behind the alleged actions of the public officials is still unknown. Cook believes the situation is a result of him and Marconi opposing a development plan for Rye Harbor backed by Gov. Chris Sununu. Hantz Marconi has been put on administrative leave indefinitely after being accused of trying to pressure Sununu to drop the investigation and seeking private information from a PDA chair.
The political circles in New Hampshire have been buzzing about the Marconis since Geno was placed on leave in April. The situation has raised questions about the integrity of the legal system in the state. Both Cook and Marconi are due in court for arraignment, with Hantz Marconi’s hearing scheduled for November 21. The scandal involving the Marconis is reminiscent of past troubles involving New Hampshire Supreme Court justices.
