Biden and Trump Meet for Smooth Transition Ahead of Inauguration
Washington, D.C. – In a notable show of bipartisanship, President Joe Biden welcomed President-elect Donald Trump to the White House for a private meeting on Wednesday. This gathering, a tradition for outgoing presidents to facilitate a smooth transition, contrasts sharply with Biden’s 2020 election win, marked by Trump’s refusal to engage in similar proceedings.
The approximately two-hour meeting took place in the Oval Office, attended by Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and Trump’s incoming Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. During brief public remarks, Biden congratulated Trump, who will be sworn in as the 47th president in January. Both leaders expressed commitment to a seamless transition, with Biden offering any necessary support.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described their conversation as "very good" and "substantive," noting the president-elect’s detailed inquiries. Although specifics of the discussion were not disclosed, Jean-Pierre emphasized its thorough nature.
Before the meeting concluded, First Lady Jill Biden extended a handwritten congratulatory letter to Melania Trump, reinforcing the spirit of cooperation. Following the meeting, Trump attended an event with House Republicans, where he endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson for continued leadership, amid ongoing discussions about the GOP’s slim majority in the House.
In addition, Trump announced plans for his upcoming administration, including appointing billionaire Elon Musk and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to a new "Department of Government Efficiency," aimed at driving reform outside traditional government structures.
Democrats, led by House Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, expressed willingness to work with Trump but also readiness to resist any aggressive attempts to limit reproductive rights or alter the Affordable Care Act, eyeing vital issues that resonate with American voters.
