New Hampshire Students Granted Reprieve from Transgender Sports Ban Enforcement by Federal Court

A federal court in New Hampshire has blocked enforcement of a law banning transgender girls from playing on school sports teams, allowing high school students Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle to continue participating with their friends and classmates while their case challenging the law proceeds. The court ruled that the law discriminates against transgender students in violation of Title IX and the U.S. Constitution. The families of Parker and Iris filed the lawsuit with the support of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, ACLU of New Hampshire, and Goodwin. The ruling allows Iris to try out for and play on the tennis and track and field teams at her new school and extends to cover the duration of the case. The lawsuit argues that the law denies transgender students equal educational opportunities and singles them out for discrimination. The court’s decision has been praised by legal advocates for recognizing the rights of transgender students to access the benefits of school sports. The families of Parker and Iris are pleased with the ruling, as it allows their children to have a safe and happy high school experience without being treated differently because of their gender identity. The case, Tirrell and Turmelle v. Edelblut, is ongoing in the United States District Court for the District of New Hampshire.
