Teen with E. coli fights kidney failure after dining at McDonald’s

A 15-year-old high school freshman in Colorado, Kamberlyn Bowler, has been hospitalized with kidney failure after contracting E. coli believed to be linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. At least 75 people across 13 states have been infected with E. coli, and one person has died. The outbreak is thought to be connected to slivered onions served on the Quarter Pounders, which have been removed from the menu. Kamberlyn’s symptoms started with a fever and stomach pain before progressing to bloody vomiting and diarrhea, leading to her diagnosis of HUS, a rare complication of E. coli that affects the kidneys. She has undergone multiple rounds of dialysis and her long-term prognosis is uncertain. Kamberlyn and her mother plan to sue McDonald’s, as do others affected by the outbreak. Dr. Nicole Iovine, an epidemiologist, stated that while HUS is rare, it can result in permanent kidney damage. McDonald’s has expressed regret over the situation and promised to make it right for affected customers. Food poisoning attorney Ron Simon, representing Kamberlyn and other victims, expects more cases to come to light and aims to determine the source of the contamination to prevent future outbreaks. The incident has underscored the importance of recognizing the symptoms of food poisoning and seeking medical help promptly.
