Chinese hackers targeted the phones of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, his running mate Sen. JD Vance, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s staff was also targeted. The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are investigating unauthorized access by Chinese actors to U.S. telecommunications infrastructure. China has hacked AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies. A Verizon spokesperson confirmed a nation-state actor targeted U.S. telecommunications providers. The hack does not seem to be part of a campaign to influence the 2024 U.S. election. China has a history of cyberespionage and the U.S. has accused Iran and Russia of interfering in the election. While China seeks to undermine U.S. society, it reportedly does not aim to influence the presidential race. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has not clarified its assessment of China’s intentions. NBC News reporters Kevin Collier, Ken Dilanian, Tom Winter, and Brian Cheung contributed to the coverage of this story.
