The opening game of the 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers was filled with major drama. In the top of the eighth inning with the score tied 2-2, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a line drive that a fan caught with his glove in left field. However, Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández protested, claiming fan interference. After a review, Torres was sent back to second base with two outs. The Dodgers went on to win the game 6-3 with a walk-off home run by Freddie Freeman in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The controversial play drew comparisons to past fan interference incidents such as Jeffrey Maier’s interference in the 1996 ALCS. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday night in Los Angeles. The Yankees will start Carlos Rodón while the Dodgers will start Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
