Matthew Sweet, alternative rock artist famous for ’90s smash ‘Girlfriend,’ undergoes ‘debilitating’ stroke while on tour

Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet suffered a stroke while on tour in Toronto in mid-October and is now on a difficult road to recovery, unable to perform for the foreseeable future. To assist with his recovery expenses, his management company set up a GoFundMe page, as Sweet currently does not have insurance or touring income. He will need to be flown back to the U.S. for rehabilitation, which is estimated to cost close to a quarter of a million dollars. The fundraiser has already raised over $150,000 from about 2,700 donors, including notable names like Judd Apatow, John Mayer, and Peter Buck.

Sweet’s manager emphasized his determination and focus in all endeavors, expressing confidence in his recovery. Sweet had to cancel over a month of shows due to health issues, including opening for Hanson and his own headlining dates. He has released over a dozen albums since his debut in 1986, with the most recent being 2021’s “Catspaw.” Supporters are urged to donate financially to assist Sweet in his recovery, as he will be forever grateful for the help.
