In a series of recent interviews, former White House chief of staff John Kelly stated that former President Donald Trump meets the definition of a fascist, citing his authoritarian tendencies and admiration for dictators. Kelly also claimed that Trump had spoken positively about Adolf Hitler, saying that Hitler did some good things. A Trump campaign spokesperson dismissed Kelly’s remarks as recounting debunked stories and denied that Trump had ever praised Hitler or expressed admiration for his generals. Kelly also discussed how he would remind Trump that U.S. generals’ loyalty was to the Constitution and the rule of law. Democrats have compared some of Trump’s rhetoric to Hitler’s, with Trump facing backlash for his comments about immigrants “poisoning the blood of our country” which resembled language used by Hitler in “Mein Kampf.” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, referring to a report of Trump’s admiration for Hitler’s generals, expressed disgust at the idea. Trump denied reading “Mein Kampf” and his campaign has denied the reports of his admiration for Hitler. Kelly’s remarks come amid continuing scrutiny of Trump’s presidency and his divisive rhetoric.
