Juul users awarded thousands of dollars in $300M class action settlement

A group of e-cigarette users are receiving unexpected financial windfalls due to a class action settlement involving Juul Labs and Altria. The $300 million settlement was reached over claims that the companies misled consumers about the addictiveness and safety of their products, as well as unlawfully marketing to minors. Despite denying the allegations, both companies agreed to the settlements to avoid further legal action.

Juul users have begun receiving deposits of hundreds to thousands of dollars as part of the settlement. The claims of approximately 842,000 eligible customers are currently being verified, with the deadline for submitting claims already passed. After deducting fees, taxes, and contingencies, eligible claimants were entitled to a total of approximately $202 million. The exact average claim amount has not been disclosed, but payouts were based on proof of purchase receipts.

Vaping remains a controversial issue in the US, with ongoing disputes between e-cigarette companies and federal regulators regarding health effects and marketing practices. The FDA recently rescinded a ban on Juul products but is still reviewing new health studies and case law before allowing them to be sold. This settlement marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battles surrounding e-cigarettes and their impact on public health.
