Suspect posing as utility worker charged with murder in home invasion; police seek second suspect

Carlos Jose Hernandez was charged with felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment for a gruesome attack on a Michigan couple. He posed as a utility worker with a fake work order to gain access to the couple’s home, where he tied up the wife and fatally attacked the husband. Hernandez was caught in Louisiana and is also wanted for an armed robbery in Ohio. A second suspect is still on the run.

The victim, Hussein Murray, was found dead in his basement with duct-taped wrists and ankles. His wife managed to escape and call 911 after being tied up and assaulted by the suspects. The couple owned a jewelry and pawn shop, leading investigators to believe they were targeted due to potentially valuable items in their home.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard described the attack as gruesome and stated that it was a targeted crime on an elderly couple in their home. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald authorized the highest charges for Hernandez, which carry a mandatory life without parole sentence.

DTE Energy issued a statement warning residents to verify the identity of any utility workers before allowing them into their homes. They urged people to ask for photo ID badges and to call the company to confirm the worker’s credentials if necessary. Hernandez’s arrest and charges serve as a reminder for homeowners to remain vigilant and cautious when allowing strangers into their homes.
