Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again called for the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, to temporarily leave the combat zone. Netanyahu dismissed accusations that Israel has deliberately attacked UNIFIL personnel as “completely false.” International criticism has been mounting as Israeli forces have targeted UN peacekeepers since the start of their ground operation in Lebanon. At least five UNIFIL members have been injured during Israel’s incursion, leading to condemnation of Israeli operations.
The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, has stated that attacks against peacekeepers breach international law and may constitute war crimes. Guterres has urged all parties, including the Israeli Defense Forces, to refrain from actions that endanger peacekeepers. The UN Security Council has expressed strong concern over the situation and reiterated support for UNIFIL’s role in regional security. Council members have emphasized their decision for UNIFIL to remain in all its positions amid the conflict.
In addition to concerns about peacekeepers, the Security Council has also expressed deep concern over civilian casualties, infrastructure destruction, and the increasing number of displaced people. They have called on all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, which requires the protection of civilians. The Council has underscored the need for diplomatic efforts to bring a lasting end to the conflict and allow civilians on both sides of the Blue Line to safely return home. All 15 council members remain committed to supporting UNIFIL’s presence in southern Lebanon despite the escalating tensions in the region.
