A man was fatally shot and nine others were wounded, including three children, after two groups fired at each other following a Tennessee State University homecoming parade. The shooting occurred off campus on Jefferson Street, after the parade had ended but parking lots were still full. Police found shell casings on both sides of the street, indicating shots came from different directions. Many in the crowd had left for a football game, but some remained when the gunfire broke out.
The victims have not been identified, and their conditions range from grazes to critical injuries. Three children, aged 12 and 14, were among those injured but are not in critical condition. Police are investigating the number of shooters involved and believe at least one person currently in the hospital fired shots. Video footage and interviews with witnesses are being used in the investigation.
The shooting was unexpected given the high police presence at the event. In a separate incident at Nissan Stadium, where the homecoming football game was taking place, three people were injured in a crowd stampede caused by a fight. Mayor Freddie O’Connell condemned the violence, describing it as a senseless act that marred what was meant to be a joyous celebration. Witness Jashawna Rucker expressed sadness over the event, noting the impact on children and the lack of safety in public spaces.
