WWF warns EU to prioritize biodiversity restoration with Green Deal

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has highlighted the alarming decline in global wildlife populations, with a 73% decrease in vertebrate species over the past 50 years, according to the Zoological Society of London. The next five years are deemed critical for action to protect biodiversity, and WWF is urging the European Union to strengthen its wildlife-protecting policies.

Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove of WWF European Policy Office emphasized the role of EU consumption in driving global biodiversity loss, particularly in critical ecosystems like the Amazon. The recent postponement of the European Commission’s deforestation law raised concerns about the urgency for immediate action to prevent further habitat destruction.

The report identifies freshwater populations as the most severely impacted, with an 85% decline over 50 years due to habitat incursions. Latin America and Africa have experienced the steepest declines in wildlife populations, while Europe has seen a 35% decrease since 1970.

WWF is calling on the EU to enforce initiatives from the European Green Deal and the newly approved Nature Restoration Law to address biodiversity loss. The organization also highlights the need for sustainable farming practices to mitigate the impacts of food production on habitat loss and water resources.

As the COP16 in Colombia and COP29 in Baku approach, WWF plans to advocate for nature-related demands to be addressed at these global climate conferences. With the clock ticking on the biodiversity crisis, urgent action is needed to safeguard wildlife populations and protect vital habitats for future generations.
