National Coming Out Day, celebrated on Oct. 11, is an important milestone for queer individuals who are taking a private, initial step in celebrating their sexuality or gender identity. For celebrities and public figures, coming out means sharing their identity with millions of people around the world. Several notable figures came out in 2024, including Sophia Bush, who revealed she is a queer woman in a Glamour magazine cover story. Comedian Amber Ruffin proudly shared her identity on social media, while actor Julia Fox jokingly came out as a lesbian in a TikTok video. Singer Maren Morris announced she is “happy to be the B in LGBTQ+” during Pride Month, and track star Trey Cunningham opened up about being gay after competing in the U.S. Olympic trials.
Actor Louisa Jacobson publicly came out as a lesbian, coinciding with her mother Meryl Streep’s 75th birthday. Former “Saturday Night Live” star Sasheer Zamata revealed she is gay in an interview, and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum Amanda Tori Meating discussed her identity as a trans woman in an Entertainment Weekly interview. Brazilian social media sensation Maya Massafera came out as a trans woman to her Instagram followers, and screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, known for “Ghost,” came out as gay in his memoir at the age of 81. These individuals have bravely shared their identities with the world, contributing to the ongoing celebration and visibility of LGBTQ individuals.
