United Nations officials, including the heads of UN agencies, have called for an end to the “appalling human suffering and humanitarian catastrophe” in the Gaza Strip, almost a year into the war between Israel and Hamas. They emphasized the need for humanitarian access to those in need and expressed their inability to carry out their work due to the overwhelming need and ongoing violence.
The UN has faced challenges in delivering aid amidst the conflict in Gaza, with nearly 300 aid workers, mostly UN staff, killed. The risk of famine persists, with all 2.1 million residents in urgent need of food and livelihood assistance, while healthcare has suffered with over 500 attacks on healthcare facilities recorded.
In the latest 24-hour reporting period, Israeli military attacks in Gaza have resulted in at least 24 deaths and 60 wounded, according to the enclave’s Health Ministry. The situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly desperate, with conditions deteriorating due to the intense bombing campaign.
The war in Gaza started in October 2023, following Hamas fighters’ actions in Israeli communities, resulting in casualties and captives. Since then, Israel’s military operations have caused significant destruction in Gaza, leading to thousands of casualties, displacement, and the emergence of hunger and disease. The UN is calling for an end to the suffering and for humanitarian aid to be delivered effectively to those in need.
