Erik Menendez has denounced Netflix’s show “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” as filled with lies and a horrible narrative. He and his wife, Tammi Menendez, shared a statement criticizing the portrayal of the 1989 murder of his parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in the series. The show is the second season of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology and focuses on the lead up and aftermath of the Menendez murders.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of the murders in 1996 and are serving life sentences without parole. Tammi Menendez’s social media account has shared updates on Erik Menendez for years, including his reaction to “Monsters.” The statement posted by Tammi Menendez claims that the show’s depiction of the brothers and their father’s sexual abuse is dishonest and harmful.
The statement also criticizes the portrayal of the brothers’ relationship as intimate, which is not supported by journalist Robert Rand’s book “The Menendez Murders.” The brothers testified that their father abused them, but prosecutors argued they killed their parents for money.
The statement concludes by expressing concern that the show’s portrayal of the crimes undermines progress in understanding childhood trauma and violence. The show has also faced backlash from viewers for depicting an intimate relationship between the brothers. Ryan Murphy has not publicly responded to the criticism.
