Sen. Raphael Warnock criticized GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, calling him “white supremacy in blackface” and the antithesis of Martin Luther King Jr.’s values. Warnock highlighted Robinson’s past controversial statements, including expressing support for slavery and calling King “worse than a maggot.” Warnock, the pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Georgia, tied Robinson to former President Donald Trump, accusing Trump of supporting unfit and unqualified Black candidates for political gain.
CNN had reported on Robinson’s lewd comments on a pornographic website, but Robinson has denied the report. Despite the controversy, Trump had praised Robinson multiple times in the past, even calling him “Martin Luther King on steroids.” However, Robinson was notably absent from Trump’s recent rally in North Carolina, and there are no immediate plans for Trump to drop his endorsement of Robinson.
Warnock warned the people of North Carolina to be wary of Robinson, stating that Trump’s support for him is part of a pattern of backing unqualified candidates to confuse voters. Despite the backlash, Robinson remains the GOP gubernatorial candidate in North Carolina. The controversy surrounding Robinson’s past statements and Trump’s endorsement have become a focal point in the upcoming election.
