A young couple from Washington state, Ilya and Sophia Tsaruk, tragically died while snorkeling on vacation in Hawaii. Sophia was pregnant, and they left behind an 18-month-old son. The couple was found unresponsive in the water near Āhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve on Maui. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate them but were unsuccessful. Local authorities have not confirmed if there is an ongoing investigation into the incident. The Tsaruks were described as excited about the future, preparing for the arrival of their unborn daughter, whom they planned to name Melody. Family and friends will hold a celebration of life and burial service for them in Washington. The couple had traveled to Hawaii with relatives for a babymoon and were wearing full face snorkel masks when the tragedy occurred. While the cause of their deaths remains unknown, family members believe the masks may have caused Sophia to panic. Despite the devastating loss, their loved ones are caring for their surviving toddler and cherishing the memories of the young couple who had so much life ahead of them. The community mourns their passing and wishes strength and peace for their family during this difficult time.
