Unpledged delegates denied request for Palestinian convention speaker, claim no support

Uncommitted delegates to the Democratic National Convention, who were elected in protest of President Joe Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza, were denied their request by Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign to have a Palestinian American speak at the convention. The delegates had been signaling that they would commit to Harris if their request was granted, but after receiving a definitive no, they plan to stay and sit outside the convention hall in the hope that organizers change their minds. Although there are only 30 uncommitted delegates out of nearly 4,700, an additional 250 Harris delegates signed a letter supporting the demand for a cease-fire and arms embargo on Israel. The decision marks a potential turning point for the delegates, who have kept their distance from protesters outside the secure area and disruptions inside the arena. Organizers and the Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation.
