A company that sent out fake robocalls impersonating then-presidential candidate Joe Biden in New Hampshire has agreed to a $1 million fine. The calls falsely claimed to be from a civil rights organization.
The company, Political Connections LLC, made the calls in November 2020 ahead of the presidential election. The calls were made to more than 700,000 residents in New Hampshire, claiming to be conducting a survey about the Black Lives Matter movement.
The calls were prerecorded messages with a voice impersonating Biden, asking for support for the movement. The caller ID was also manipulated to make it appear as though the calls were coming from a civil rights organization named “Black Lives Matter Foundation.”
The New Hampshire attorney general’s office launched an investigation into the robocalls after receiving numerous complaints. The investigation found that the calls violated state law by falsely representing the origin of the calls.
Political Connections LLC has since agreed to pay a $1 million fine to settle the matter. The company has also agreed to issue a public apology and to cease engaging in similar practices in the future.
Attorney General Gordon MacDonald stated that the settlement sends a strong message that deceptive and misleading robocalls will not be tolerated in New Hampshire. He also emphasized the importance of protecting residents from fraudulent and deceptive practices.
The settlement serves as a reminder to companies engaging in robocalls that they must adhere to state laws and regulations. The agreement highlights the consequences of engaging in deceptive practices and the importance of holding accountable those who violate consumer protection laws.
